BÉBÉ BEATS®facilitators

Mme Shalice

  • What is your educational background?

I’m currently an Elementary Education Etudent at Campus Saint-Jean, the French campus of the University of Alberta. My studies are focused on teaching in French, and they’ve been shaped by my own journey in French immersion, which began back in Grade 1. Even though many of my classmates had a head start, I pushed myself to catch up and quickly fell in love with the language. Over the years, I’ve been fortunate to learn from incredible teachers who made French come alive for me — they’re the reason I decided to become a teacher myself.

  • How did you first learn French, and how long have you been speaking it?

I’m actually the first person in my family to speak French. I started learning in Grade 1 simply because I wanted to try something new and different. At first, it was a challenge to keep up with my peers who had begun earlier, but that challenge motivated me to work harder. Over time, French became a natural part of who I am, shaping how I see the world and giving me access to experiences and communities I wouldn’t have had otherwise. I have been continuing my studies in French ever since so for about 13 years!

  • What kind of experience do you have working with children?

I have always been extremely passionate about children and eager to learn about childhood development. From volunteering in classrooms and day homes, to babysitting, to coaching soccer teams, to summer camps, I’ve done it all!

  • What do you love most about the French language?

For me, French is more than just a language- it’s a doorway to connections and opportunities especially in a society where it is not as widely promoted as it once was. I believe that the French language invites you to think about other perspectives and other cultures especially being bilingual- that feeling is something I want to share with others, so that they can experience the joy and confidence that comes with learning and immersing yourself in this language.

  • Why are you excited to be part of the BÉBÉ BEATS team?

I am most excited about building something that is going to impact the community in such a special way. A program like this has been needed for a long time in our community and BÉBÉ BEATS® reassures us that the next generation and generations to come are being left on good hands.
